Florida Avenue median up for more debate in Hemet
By Craig Shultz
The much-debated Florida Avenue median will again be discussed by the Hemet City Council when it meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14.
Caltrans will construct a raised-curb median along Highway 74, which is Florida Avenue through Hemet, as a safety measure. City leaders and business owners have protested against the median, saying it will limit access and clog traffic.
Hemet recently rejected a proposal that would have had the city maintain landscaping in the median, something Caltrans does not include in its projects.
Caltrans controls the state highway and can construct the median without city approval. The agency has made many alterations to the plan in an effort to appease those with concerns.
