A fire damaged a single-family residence Wednesday evening in the 1300 block of North Helen Avenue in Ontario, according to an Ontario Fire Department report.

Before firefighters arrived, two Ontario police officers entered the home to convince the occupant, who was trying to put out an attic fire, to get out of the house, according to Ontario fire Battalion Chief Scot Roeber. The trio escaped without injury.

The neighborhood is north of El Camino Elementary School.

The fire was reported at 7:15 p.m. and knocked down by 7:28 p.m. Ontario firefighters were aided by an engine from the Montclair Fire Department. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The occupants displaced by the fire declined assistance from the American Red Cross.
