Felon charged with trying to hit deputy near Tomas Rivera Middle School

A parolee accused of racing away from sheriff’s deputies — one of whom he allegedly tried to hit — in a stolen vehicle in Mead Valley and driving across residential properties before crashing into a fence outside a school was charged today with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and other felonies.

Hector De La Torre, 32, was arrested last Wednesday after the pursuit that ended in front of Tomas Rivera Middle School.

Along with the assault count, De La Torre is charged with felony evading, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, hit-and-run resulting in property damage and receiving stolen property.

He’s being held in lieu of $275,000 bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside and is slated to make his initial court appearance this afternoon at the Riverside Hall of Justice.

According to Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. William Davis, deputies attempted to stop De La Torre near the intersection of Campos and Fox roads about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday for an alleged traffic violation, but the defendant floored the pickup truck instead.

Davis alleged that the ex-con drove “recklessly through several yards and fences in Mead Valley,” with deputies on his tail. At one point, the ex- con allegedly maneuvered in a manner that posed a threat to one of the law enforcement officers.

“The truck ultimately became disabled after it collided with a chain link fence at the Tomas Rivera Middle School campus,” the sergeant said.

No one was injured.

Davis said the campus was placed on lockdown while a search was conducted for possible contraband that the convicted felon was suspected of tossing from the pickup. It was unclear whether the gun allegedly in his possession was thrown from the vehicle or was seized from inside it.

The lockdown was lifted within an hour.
