In the fast-food industry, Southern California’s top chains are gearing up for a showdown when it comes to cheap eats.

Lake Forest-based Del Taco is the latest fast food chain to tweak its value menu. In early December, Taco Bell and McDonald’s announced plans to revamp their value menus for 2018. This week (Dec. 28), Del Taco is adding a Salsa Chicken Taco to its Buck and Under Menu.

The $1 soft flour tortilla taco is made with grilled chicken, roasted chile salsa, lettuce and diced tomatoes. The new addition, created especially for the value menu, joins two other items added since September: the Queso Chicken Roller and Mini Shakes.

The new items bring the Buck and Under Menu to 19 items as of Dec. 28. Without naming names, Chief Marketing Officer Barry Westrum took a stab at the tiered value being proposed by McDonald’s in 2018.

“In a world of $1, $2 and $3 menus, you won’t be able to find a better deal than at Del Taco,” Westrum said in a statement.

Starting Jan. 4, McDonald’s said it is introducing $1 $2 $3 Dollar Menu. Each price point features four different food and drink choices including a sausage burrito, bacon McDouble, and triple cheeseburger.

Irvine-based Taco Bell said it plans to add at least 20 more items to its 3-year-old value menu over the course of 2018. Many of those items will be limited-run items created specifically for the menu.
