Elsinore’s James Checco is the HSGameTime girls tennis coach of the year
Elsinore girls tennis coach James Checco doesn’t get many players with an extensive club background.
What those players lack in experience, they make up for with hard work and a willingness to improve.
Checco has turned the program into a powerhouse in the Sunbelt League. The Tigers went undefeated in league play for the sixth consecutive season, winning their 10 matches by a combined score of 164-16.
Despite moving up to Division 4 for the CIF Southern Section playoffs this season, Elsinore advanced to the semifinals for the second consecutive season. The Tigers finished the year with a 20-2 record.
For these reasons, Checco has been chosen the HSGameTime girls tennis coach of the year.
Checco said the team’s success in recent season has to do with his player’s strong mental approach.
“We have a pretty smart group of players — eight of them have GPA of 4.0 or better,” said Checco, who wrapped up his 13th season as the school’s girls tennis coach. “We show them a stroke they have never used before, and they have got it down in a couple of days. They are always willing to learn, and its their discipline and their tenacity to get better each day that helps us have this kind of success.”
