Investigators arrested a man early Thanksgiving morning for fatally stabbing an acquaintance days earlier in the Big Bear area, San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said Thursday.

Richard Gerdelman, 33, was arrested around 1 a.m. near Fox Farm Road and Big Bear Boulevard in Big Bear on suspicion of murder, according to a sheriff’s news release. Authorities say Gerdelman stabbed 48-year-old Andrew Spencer Sunday night. Spencer was taken to a hospital but ultimately died Wednesday, officials said.

Around 8:15 p.m. Sunday, paramedics were called to the 300 block of Maple Lane in Sugar Loaf for reports of someone honking a car horn and a man yelling for help, the statement said.

Paramedics found a man, later identified as Spencer, in a vehicle unconscious and suffering from stab wounds, sheriff’s officials said.

Paramedics took Spencer to Bear Valley Hospital then flew him to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was placed on life support, according to authorities. Spencer died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff’s homicide investigators found Gerdelman and interviewed him about the attack, officials said. They learned Gerdelman and Spencer were acquaintances. Gerdelman was subsequently arrested.

A motive for the killing was not released.
