Chino fire slows traffic along 71 Freeway near Pine Avenue
CHINO HILLS >> Firefighters battled a brush fire forcing officials to issue a SigAlert in both directions of the 71 Freeway Friday afternoon.
The blaze was first reported shortly after 2:30 p.m. on the east side of the freeway near Pine Avenue, Chino Valley Fire District spokeswoman Massiel De Guevara said.
“It scorched about 5 acres and the forward progress has been stopped,” she said.
Units of the Ontario Fire Department have reportedly contained the small brush fire east of state Highway 71.
The northbound carpool and number one lane is open but traffic is backed up to south of Pine Avenue.
Fire equipment is still on the shoulder of the road and southbound traffic is moving slow with very heavy traffic remaining, according to a Chino Hills emergency alert.
It’s unclear what sparked the blaze, but officials said they were fighting a smaller blaze nearby and winds could have taken embers from that fire igniting the other.
No structures were threatened and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
