At least one child was killed when the van the child was riding in rolled over along the eastbound 10 Freeway in Indio Wednesday morning, according to California Highway Patrol reports.

The child was among several people in the white van, officials said.

The crash was reported around 12:30 a.m. two miles west of Summit Road near Chiriaco Summit, Riverside County/Cal Fire officials said.

Initial reports indicate the driver of the van attempted to avoid a crash, swerved and ended up rolling the vehicle, officials said.

A total of six people were in the van when at least two, including the child, were ejected, according to CHP and fire officials.

Paramedics flew two people out to an area trauma center. Three others were driven to a hospital, officials said.

Authorities shut down the freeway for nearly five hours. All lanes had reopened by 5:30 a.m.
