AZUSA — Host Azusa Pacific downed Cal Baptist 3-1 in the opening game of the NCAA Division II West Regional on Thursday.

The Cougars belted two homers to spoil a solid outing by CBU right-hander Andrew Bernstein, who gave up five hits in seven innings and struck out seven.

Michael Staudinger’s home run in the second inning staked APU (41-10) to a 1-0 advantage. Cougar starter Billy Oxford didn’t allow a hit until the fourth when Bryce Macy launched a solo shot to right to tie the game.

Justin Gomez’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth proved the difference. The Lancers had chances to take the lead but stranded runners in the final four innings.

CBU (34-17) will play the loser of the Cal Poly Pomona and Chico State game at 11 a.m. on Friday.
