Bob Dylan rehearsed in Riverside — and practically no one knew it

Like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone, Bob Dylan spent four days in Riverside and apparently kept it almost completely secret.
The music legend — who’s equally legendary for his private ways — rehearsed at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium in downtown.
The appearance was confirmed by Arich Berghammer, Live Nation’s executive vice president of clubs and theaters, when he updated the Riverside City Council last week on the Fox Performing Arts Center and Riverside Municipal Auditorium. Live Nation manages both venues.
“We just had Bob Dylan here for four days,” Berghammer said Oct. 24. “Bob Dylan called us (and) asked us if it would be possible to come to Riverside to do his rehearsal at the RMA. So when you have the opportunity where you become relevant, all of a sudden people call you instead of you calling them. Which makes it a lot easier for us to do business.”
Berghammer and Live Nation’s Amir Mertaban, who runs the Fox Performing Arts Center and Riverside Municipal Auditorium, did not return calls or emails this week.
Passerbys were surprised to hear the musician was so close.
“Of course I’m a fan — he was the voice of our generation,” said Julian Garcia, who declined to give his age.
Dylan reaching out to Riverside shows what a draw the city is becoming, said City Councilman Mike Gardner, who represents the downtown area.
“I believe that it shows the quality of the facilities that we have available, that someone like Bob Dylan would want to reserve them to rehearse a big show,” Gardner said. “Both as an entertainer and a Nobel laureate, it’s an honor for us.”
