Auto Club Speedway generated more than $105 million for San Bernardino County in 2016, according to a recent study by UC Riverside.

“We see ourselves as a real contributor to the economic train here in the Inland Empire and in Southern California,” president Dave Allen said in a phone interview.

The study by UC Riverside’s Center for Economic Forecasting and Development also found the Fontana venue generated $148.7 million for Southern California and $156.2 million for the state.

Wages accounted for $2,531,210 in San Bernardino County, $3,424,098 in Southern California and $3,473,501 in the state.

The study took six months to complete. Allen said the last time the speedway undertook an economic impact study was in 2007. The speedway opened in 1997, but Allen said the fact that both studies were done in anniversary years was coincidental.

The speedway celebrated its 20th anniversary in March at the Auto Club 400, one of the biggest events on the speedway’s calendar. But Allen said the venue has a lot more going for it.

You’ve got commercials and movie shoots that are happening here. You’ve got music and festivals and things like that. … There have been manufacturers’ arrive and drive events on a big scale.”

Allen said that the 2007 study showed a local impact of $210 million, but that was when the track hosted two cup events.

“The landscape has changed a little bit. We’re active throughout the year. … I think it’s important for us to continue to diversify.”

Next month, the track will open a holiday event called Magic of Lights, at which attendees will drive through a 1.5 mile […]
