Aquinas girls volleyball team sweeps Walnut to extend remarkable playoff run
SAN BERNARDINO — The playoff lifespan for a fifth-place volleyball team usually is short.
Then again, the Aquinas girls volleyball team isn’t a run-of-the-mill fifth-place entrant.
Aquinas again showed the depth and strength of the Ambassador League on Saturday evening, as the Falcons swept Walnut, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 6 quarterfinal match.
Tuesday’s semifinals will be an Ambassador League showcase, with Aquinas visiting rival Notre Dame and Loma Linda Academy heading to Ontario Christian. This marks the second consecutive season the league has produced four semifinalists, but this time, the league is guaranteed a section champion.
Aquinas (12-9) swept Granite Hills and top-seeded La Puente Bishop Amat in the first two rounds.
“Our league is incredibly tough and talented, and we know that each match that we have played has prepared us for these moments,” Falcons coach Victoria Cachapero said. “We were close in some of the losses in league, but playing great teams made us better and got us focused for the playoffs.”
