RIVERSIDE — It is to be expected at tournament time. No athlete wants the season to end early, and everyone will do whatever is necessary to postpone that final moment.

And so when Cal State San Bernardino, playing in its 18th straight Division II volleyball West Regional, faced Azusa Pacific, playing in its first ever … well, let’s just say there was a stubbornness about this match.

It went five sets, with the Coyotes ultimately prevailing, 25-10, 25-23, 14-25, 21-25, 15-13, at Cal Baptist’s Van Dyne Gym. That put them into Friday night’s semifinal, against the winner of the late match between national No. 1 CBU and Sonoma State.
