It’s served the region admirably for 11 years, weathering the pounding of thousands of cleats and wide-ranging elemental extremes: wind, rain and even snow.

But it’s time is up.

The artificial turf at Patricia H. Birdsall Park in southern Temecula, a large sports park with multiple fields, is being replaced this summer.

“They were done. They were just too old,” said Neil Tomison, a coach with Temecula United Soccer.

United is one of the many local soccer outfits that uses the fields for both practice and tournaments, which bring in hundreds of teams from all around the region.

The heavy use turned the fields, which utilize sand and rubber pellets to provide a cushion for slide-tackling soccer players, into the equivalent of greenish-black mush that would follow players home, finding crevices in home carpeting and minivan floorboards.

“There was so much black rubber on the field it was crazy,” said Tomison, a Scottish import who has been coaching in the region for around 10 years.
