2 men arrested following carjacking in Moreno Valley

A Moreno Valley man and his alleged accomplice are in jail after allegedly carjacking and robbing a man Friday, Nov. 3, in Moreno Valley, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.

Jose Luis Mendez, 19, was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 7, on suspicion of carjacking, kidnapping during carjacking and conspiracy to commit a felony, jail records showed. He was booked at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. Bail is set at $250,000.

Majid Woods, 18, also of Moreno Valley, was arrested on suspicion of receiving known stolen property. He was also booked at the Smith Correctional facility. Bail is $10,000.

The incident occurred early Friday when the two suspects, armed with an assault rifle, entered the back seat of a vehicle driven by the victim on the 23000 block of Sunnymead Boulevard in Moreno Valley, a sheriff’s news release said. They demanded cash. The victim gave them his money and jumped out of the vehicle, escaping.

One of the suspects got into the driver’s seat and fled, the release said. The victim suffered minor injuries and was treated by medical personnel.

The sheriff’s Special Enforcement Team took over the investigation and found the vehicle Tuesday near Chippewa Trail in Moreno Valley, the release said. Deputies stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver. A search warrant was conducted on the 24000 block of Chippewa Trail and the second suspect arrested.
