2 killed, 1 injured in suspected DUI crash on Thanksgiving morning in Hemet
Two people died and another was injured during an early morning crash Thanksgiving Day in Hemet, police officials said, adding that speed and alcohol may have both contributed to the collision.
The names of the deceased, a man and woman, were not released pending notification of next of kin, according to a news released issued by the Hemet Police Department on Thursday, Nov. 23.
The crash, which was reported just before 2 a.m., forced the closure of the intersection for about five hours while police investigated the incident, according to the release.
Officers were called to the area of Buena Vista and Whittier, and when they arrived they found a silver Volkswagen partly wrapped around a tree just west of the intersection. Both occupants of the car were dead inside the vehicle, the release says.
Police also found a white Dodge truck that had crashed into the fence of a home’s yard on the northwest corner of the intersection, according to the release. A female passenger in the truck was partially thrown out of the vehicle and was taken to a nearby hospital. She is expected to recover from her injuries. The driver of the truck, a man, was not injured.
Through their preliminary investigation, police officers determined the Dodge was traveling north on Buena Vista Street and the Volkswagen was the traveling West on Whittier at speeds of about 90 to 100 mph, the release says.
The Volkswagen is alleged to have failed to stop at a stop sign on Buena Vista and crashed into the front corner of the truck, sending the car onto the north curb of Whittier, where it hit a street sign and then the tree, according to the release.
After the impact, the truck reportedly went up the west curb of Buena Vista and into the fence.
