A broken gas line and broken water pipe in the middle of a cul-de-sac in Riverside forced one house to evacuate Monday night, while residents of 14 other homes were asked to shelter in place, a fire official said.
The Gas Company and Riverside Public Utilities crews were working through the night, and repairs were estimated to be finished by about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The problem was reported at 8:09 pm. in the 11000 block of Springway Court, east of Pierce Street and Riverwalk Parkway in the city’s La Sierra neighborhood, according to Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst
It is unknown which line became damaged first, but the breaks “lifted up the street a couple inches,” Vanderhorst said.
The Gas Company was concerned with water getting into the broken gas line and possibly damaging gas appliances in the houses, he said. The gas was shut off to eight homes as a precaution
